Chemistry Department brings home a turkey!

On October 3rd, the Department of Chemistry fielded an epic team for the annual University of Alberta Turkey Trot running event in support of the United Way.  Team members included Bing Cao, Hezhen (Andrew) Xie, Minjia Hu, Chengcheng Rao, Cong Jin, Ali Chou, Karl Kopecky, Alex Brown, and Jillian Buriak.

Alberta Innovates Technologies Futures Scholarships

The Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship program (GSS) is designed to enable promising students to succeed in areas of scientific research that are strategically important to Alberta. Lydia Chen received Don Ursino Award for Excellence in Teaching

 

The Centre of Pedagogical Innovation at Brock University has named Lydia Chen (Le Group, 2012) the 2014 recipient of the Don Ursino Award for Excellence in Teaching Large Classes. This is a university wide teaching award and there is one recipient per year. Says Lydia, “I am honoured to be the first chemistry faculty to receive this award.”

Prof. Frederick West (CHEM 502 Seminar Coordinator, Organic Chemistry) presents an award certificate to Burcin Akgun (Hall Group) who is the recipient of the Best CHEM 502 Seminar of the Year Award 2013-2014, Organic Chemistry Division.

The award was presented in the occasion of the annual Gilead Alberta Lecture, delivered by Professor Brian Stoltz (Caltech) on September 15, 2014 (Prof. Stoltz is shown on the left). Dr. Robin Nicol and Dr. Zhongxin Zhou (respectively 3rd and 4th from the left) present Simon Ng (Derda Group) with an award certificate as the co-recipient of the Gilead Alberta Graduate Award of Excellence in Organic Chemistry 2014.  Shaun McKinnie (Vederas Group) is the other co-recipient.  Shaun was attending a conference at the time of the award presentation.
