Honours for Chemistry undergraduate researchers at 2016 WCUCC

Four undergraduate researchers recognized for research excellence at the recent Western Canada Undergraduate Chemistry Conference in Winnipeg

The 30th Western Canadian Undergraduate Chemistry Conference was held in Winnipeg on 6-7 May 2016. Four of our outstanding undergraduate researchers took top honours in their categories:

Heather Baker (Campbell research group)
1st Place - Biochemistry Oral Presentation
Topic: Blue Shifted Variant of the mNeonGreen Fluorescent Protein

Cat-Tuong Huynh (Brown research group)
1st Place - Computational/Theoretical/Physical Poster
Topic: Computational Study on Relative Stabilities and Excited States of Tautomers of Modified Emissive RNA Nucleobases

Matthew Keirstead (Lucy research group)
1st Place - Analytical Poster
Topic: Characterization of a Multi-Modal High Performance Liquid Chromatography Column

Asad Makhani (Gibbs research group)
1st Place - Biochemistry Poster
Topic: Reducing the Background-Triggered Reaction in Lesion Induced DNA Amplification

Congratulations to the award winners and to all of our students who represented our department in this event. We look forward to next year's WCUCC, to be hosted right here in Edmonton and organized by our own Chemistry Students' Association.
