Joe Mihevc has served as City Councillor for the former City of York and the new City of Toronto. Joe has an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Theology and Social Ethics (theses on Holocaust Studies and Canadian Mennonites, respectively). He serves in a variety of capacities that allow him to demonstrate his concerns for social issues, as well as democratic, accessible and responsible government. As a current member and past Vice-Chair of the Toronto Transit Commission, Joe has led the way on key projects, such as with the St. Clair transit improvement project, and the replacement of the aging streetcar fleet with modern Light Rail Vehicles. He has facilitated community involvement regarding transit accessibility and actively supported suicide prevention measures within the TTC. On the Board of Health, Joe has served as Vice Chair, and presently, as Chair, where he has championed the city's Student Nutrition Program, among many other public health initiatives. Joe has been an active member of the Community Development and Recreation Committee, advancing a local poverty reduction strategy and supporting additional services for women and LGBT youth. Additionally, Joe is a member of the Toronto and East York Community Council, and is the City Council Liaison to the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto. Joe is a recipient of numerous awards and honours recognizing his commitment to diversity, public health, and community engagement. He also has been involved with the City's interfaith community, whose initiatives include the Faith in the City symposium, which promotes community involvement on social justice issues.
