Don Carmichael recently retired from the Political Science department at the University of Alberta after 44 years of teaching and reflection on a wide range of issues in traditional and contemporary political philosophy. His current work focuses on understanding (i) public goods and community values in diversely multicultural societies; (ii) the work of cultural imagination in creating shared realities; and (iii) the life of spiritual transcendence. His past work (and publication) focused on justice, rights and human flourishing, both in current issues and in the great works of the western tradition. Relevant publications in this context include articles on issues of rights with reference to abortion, euthanasia, pornography, the welfare state, and terrorism.
