Jane Samson is Professor of History at the University Alberta and a longstanding member of the Ecumenical and Interfaith office of the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton. Both professionally and personally she is committed to promoting understanding about the importance of religion in matters of culture contact, humanitarianism, and the position of Indigenous Peoples under colonialism. A specialist in Pacific studies, she has published works comparing the colonial situation across the Pacific world from British Columbia to New Zealand and Australia. Indigenous clergy are her most recent research interest. At the heart of her approach is the belief that, rather than an inevitable "clash of civilizations," our interconnected world offers unprecedented opportunities for education, understanding, and collective action on our shared and vulnerable planet.
