Postdoctoral Fellow in Security Studies

The China Institute of the University of Alberta is seeking a post-doctoral fellow for a one-year term with the possibility of extension. Shorter terms may also be considered.

The ideal candidate would have a PhD in policy studies, the politics of China, Asia contemporary regional studies, or other relevant fields with established research interests in Chinese politics and foreign policies. Knowledge of the military and security policies of China would be desirable but not required.

The successful candidate would be expected to work at the China Institute to conduct research on Chinese politics and foreign policy issues. Potential topics for research would include, but not necessarily be limited to: the issues related to the South China Sea and the East China Sea, and China's relations within East Asia, including Japan, the Koreas, and South East Asia. As well, relations between China and Canada, strategic rivalries between China and the United States and China and India could form research topics. China's growing military capacity and China's more active involvement in global security affairs may well merit attention.

The post-doctoral fellow would also be welcome to conduct research on related topics of his/her own interest and would be encouraged to publish while at the China Institute. Fluency in English is required and strong writing and analytical skills are essential.

The post-doctoral position will be accorded salary and benefits in accordance with experience and policies for post-doctoral fellows at the University of Alberta. The China Institute would provide opportunities and some financial support for the fellow to travel to conferences related to his/her field of research on behalf of the China Institute.
