The China Institute of the University of Alberta will host its 8th annual "National Forum on Canada-China Economic Policy." The theme this year is "Economic Policy & Trade Options for Canada Amidst Uncertainties Surrounding NAFTA and US/China Trade Disputes." This invitation-only one-day event will be held in the Crystal Ballroom at the Fairmont Palliser in downtown Calgary on Thursday, May 17, 2018. Senior federal and provincial officials with responsibility for investment and trade policy will attend, along with industry leaders, including those from Chinese firms operating in Canada, and leading experts on trade and investment issues.
With a looming trade war between the U.S. and China, the ongoing negotiations of NAFTA and the revived Trans-Pacific Partnership, a new dynamic in global trade relations for Canada has emerged. As well, there remain uncertainties regarding the opening of formal negotiations on a Canada-China Free Trade Agreement. Evolving economic and policy environments in China and Canada add to the complexity and uncertainty surrounding Canadian economic relations with China and Asia that warrants a closer look at some key issues. The Forum this year will focus on the following topics:
