China Institute Releases its 5th Annual Survey on Albertans' Views on China

2 December 2015

There is general consensus among Albertans on the importance of diversifying the province's economy and market access and that China will play a key role in both, according to the 2015 Survey. Close to 4 in 5 of Albertans consider China an important market for Alberta's goods and services and 69% agree that trading more with Asia is in Alberta's interest.

A large majority of Albertans, continue to support the building of energy infrastructure to export energy to Asia (65%), welcome Chinese tourism (81%), and value the contribution of Chinese students to Alberta's society (69%). But skepticism towards China's investment is growing (43% in support in 2015 compared to 49% in 2013). In addition, fewer Albertans appear to link the economic strength and opportunities offered by the fastest expanding major economy to the future of Alberta's own growth.

Calgary continues to lead the province in supporting engagement with China, there is an overall decline however in such enthusiasm across Alberta. "Given Alberta's export-driven economy, the views of its citizens towards China, the world's largest economy, do matter" said Professor Gordon Houlden, Director of the China Institute.

Over 1,200 Albertans are polled during the 5thannual survey conducted by the Population Research Lab at the University of Alberta.
