China Tour: Experiencing Development and Change
(AUECO 356 / AUPOL 356)

A 3 credit course without prerequisites, open to all University of Alberta students.

We invite all University of Alberta students to join us for a three week study tour to China, including travel to Zhuhai (with instruction at the English-language United International College), Zhongshan, Guangzhou, the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone, Beijing, and Macau. Through tours, lectures, and research, this course explores the effects of economic and institutional reforms since the 1980s as well as those of globalization, with links to China's history and culture.

Each of the two instructors brings his own expertise and spirit to the course. Dr. Varghese Manaloor specializes in economic development and agricultural economics and has been leading trips abroad, notably to India, since 2001. Dr. Jérôme Melançon specializes in political theory and topics tied to inter-cultural relations; as a poet, he also has an interest in Chinese literature.

The tour will take place between April 27 and May 15, 2015. As of December 2014, the MIS fee is set at $3,100 and the China institute is partially funding the trip for up to twelve students, bringing the final fee to $1,900 (after reimbursement). The MIS fee does not include plane tickets (approx.. $1,200-$1,500), but does include some meals. No previous knowledge of China, economics, or political studies is required. Students from Edmonton will be accommodated in their preparation for the trip.
