Communication Sciences and Disorders

Clinical Education

The clinical component of the Master of Science (SLP) program provides experience in the evaluation, treatment and management of articulation, language, fluency, swallowing, voice and resonance disorders as well as in the fundamental practice of audiology. Students acquire the necessary clinical experiences for certification by the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and registration with the Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.

Clinical placements are taken at approved clinical facilities under the supervision of qualified professional staff. The first experience is in-house at Corbett Clinic during spring/summer term of the first year. Students also complete a second introductory placement in-house at Corbett Clinic or with a designated community partner.

In-house Clinic
Corbett Clinic is a community service facility that operates within the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (formerly known as the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology). Speech and language intervention services are provided by students in the MSc SLP program. All students complete their first placements in Corbett Clinic, under the supervision of staff in the Department The clinic provides services during all three of the university's academic terms. Each client receives a complete assessment and at least one term of treatment services. Sessions typically occur two times per week for 45 minutes to an hour.

External Advanced Clinical Placements
Advanced clinical placements may include regional, national and international locations. Students must travel to meet the clinical education requirements. Students are responsible for the cost associated with clinical placements, e.g., travel, accommodation, appropriate dress and immunization expenses. No remuneration is received.

Cooperating Clinical locations include Edmonton, Calgary, Rural Alberta, and provinces across Canada.
