Meet the CHEEP Staff


Jamie Maschmeyer
Program Coordinator/Speech-Language Pathologist

Jamie completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta obtaining a Bachelor of Education. She then pursued graduate study at the U of A, receiving a Master of Speech-Language Pathology.  Jamie has worked in early education in Edmonton and St. Albert for the past 17 years.  She has found her passion for teaching on a collaborative team compliments her interest in speech and language development in young children.  In 2002 Jamie, working with Lu-Anne McFarlane and Colette Strain, founded the Corbett Hall Early Education Program (CHEEP) at the University of Alberta.


Valerie Epp
Certified Teacher

Val started her early childhood education in the early 1980’s. After pursuing studies at Université Laval in Quebec City she moved to Edmonton to attend U of A where she obtained a Bachelor of Education with a focus in Teaching French as a Second Language in 1994.  Val has worked with preschool children with special needs since 1995 and has been the classroom teacher at CHEEP since 2009.


Sandra Freeman
Speech Language Pathologist

Sandra is the SLP working in the morning class.  She grew up in Winnipeg and moved to Edmonton in the early 1990s to continue her education.  Sandra graduated with her Master of Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Alberta in 1995, and has more than 10 years of experience working with preschool children in early education classrooms.


Lynda Thibault
Therapist Assistant

Lynda is the Therapy Assistant in the classroom.  Lynda was born in Dawson Creek, BC.  She has also lived in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Calgary, and moved to Edmonton in January 2013.  Lynda received a diploma in Occupational Therapy Assistant from Medicine Hat College.  Lynda worked as an OTA at Renfrew Educational services in their Community Services division for 4 years before moving to Edmonton.  At Renfrew, Lynda worked with children from kindergarten to grade 6.


Carla Brown
Physical Therapist

Carla is originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and graduated with a degree in Physiotherapy from the University of Saskatchewan in 1978.  She has worked for 34 years within the Edmonton region in various areas of physiotherapy (Orthopedics, Respiratory, Women's Health), but she has spent the last  15 years of her career working in the area of pediatrics.  Her primary role has been a consultant with various private agencies that provide services to families who have children with disabilities, and the Edmonton Public School Board where she presently is still employed in the Early Education Program at Homesteader Elementary School.  Carla has been consulting to CHEEP since 2012.


Sarah Valente
Occupational Therapist

Sarah has been working as an Occupational Therapist in Early Education since 2001 and joined the CHEEP team in 2006.  She is originally from Saskatchewan, and grew up in Regina before moving to Saskatoon to attend the University of Saskatchewan, where she obtained a B.A. in Psychology. Sarah moved to Edmonton in 1998 to complete her degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Alberta.


Frieda Woodruff Gramit
Music Teacher

Frieda has been playing with children and music for over 30 years, in both her native USA and her true home of Canada.  She has lived in Edmonton since 1991, and has been a part of CHEEP since it began in 2002: first as an Occupational/Physical Therapist Assistant, and now as the music teacher.  Frieda's background includes academic study of music (BMus, MA in Musicology), a Therapy Assistant diploma, and basic teacher's training in the Music Together preschool music program.  She has fallen in love with yoga, and enjoys exploring all kinds of movement and music with children.  Frieda is a registered Music Teacher with ARMTA.
