Getting Started - for Supervisors and Student Clinicians

This document provides general guidelines and suggestions for the orientation phase of the clinical placement. An effective orientation sets the stage for a collaborative practicum, meeting the needs and expectations of all parties. Clinical Educators and students are also directed to the Clinical Externship Handbook, pages 3 through 5 for a general description of responsibilities and procedures.

Student Goals and Clinical Learning

Student learning is facilitated by collaborative goal identification and evaluation during the placement process.

  • Clinical Learning Plan - Form (pdf)
  • Clinical Learning Plan - Example (word)
All students are required to complete a Clinical Learning Plan (CLP) during each placement. This promotes clinical reflection and reasoning and helps students to take an active role in professional and skill development. It is expected that students will begin this process independently by the third week of placement, identifying goals for the placement. The CLP is then shared with the Clinical Educator who may suggest modifications or additions to the CLP. It is also common for goals to be added after the midterm evaluation. The student completes the CLP at the end of term by reflecting on their progress. The final CLP is posted on their clinical portfolio at the end of each placement.
  • Behaviours of Professionalism (pdf)
This document identifies skills/behaviours of professionalism and can be a supportive tool used in conjunction with the Clinical Appraisal Form to facilitate discussion and student goal development.
  • Meeting Conference Outline (pdf)
Regular meetings with the student during the placement are recommended. This outline provides some ideas for structure and content for organizing meetings with students. Specific information about meeting requirements can be found in the Externship Handbook.
  • Clinical Reasoning Document (pdf)
This resource provides students and clinical educators with information and strategies to facilitate clinical reasoning and reflection.

Evaluations

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (formerly known as the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology) requires that a formal evaluation be completed at the end of the placement. We also suggest that a midterm evaluation be completed. This appraisal form is based on the Wisconsin Procedure for Appraisal of Clinical Competence and evaluates student independence across a number of clinical and professional skill areas.
