How to Have a Supportive Conversation

We all have the capacity to help, and at some point any one of our community members may become a first-point of contact for those experiencing distress.

To better support and navigate these conversations, the Community Social Work Team is hosting sessions related to the Community Helpers Program six helping skills. Participants will learn how to approach concerning conversations with peers, how to engage in supportive listening, and how to make appropriate referrals to on- and off-campus resources.

This training is open to all members of our campus community as we all have a role in supporting our peers. For staff and faculty, the Helping Skills workshop compliments the information in the Helping, Identifying, and Referring Students in Distress training through Counselling and Clinical Services. These sessions replace the previously held Front Line Staff training.
