    Faculty, Program/Area of study
    Engineering, PhD/Energy Systems

What do you like/love about your program?
What I like most about my Ph.D. program is the mix of engineering and philosophy, I do not only work on finding solutions for technical problems but I also have to have a deep understanding of the fine details of the solutions. Moreover, my program has increased my critical thinking skills, which is reflected in everything in my life.

    What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I like all sports! I watch soccer, basketball, volleyball, and Handball. I love cooking new food, watching comedy shows, and electronic shopping!

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
If cooking is a talent, so I have this talent. I enjoy cooking all kinds of food, once I visit a restaurant I find myself focusing on how the meals are cooked, once I go home I cannot wait until I cook it. To be honest, I do not cook meals that might take more than an hour. Everyone eats my food asks me to quit engineering and run a restaurant. What makes my food different that I cook healthy, low-calorie, and tasty meals! My recipe is a secret!

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
I see writing notes about every class is the best technique to study. Preparing a good summary of each course make it easy to remember the main objectives and remind me of each course tricks. Solving assignments twice, one before the assignment due date and the other at the exam night can make any exam much easier than expected.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
You have to figure it out through having a tea time with me. We will for sure create an amazing experience over a cup of tea.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
Peer tutoring others what I have learnt helps me a lot. Sometimes, your peer can come up with a different point of view that you might not think of at all. When you share each other ideas, the most difficult topic will ease out right away.

    What are your interests/passions/hobbies?

I love stories of any kind, and I really like theatre! What is one helpful study technique that you use?
My memory isn't the greatest, so a go to study technique that I use is writing down my notes from class, and then making summary notes based off of those notes. I like to try fitting each chapter on one side of a page, and it helps me to group the information into categories, which makes memorizing a lot easier.

What language(s) do you speak or write?
I can only speak and write English! I know a little French, but not enough to get by.

    Describe yourself in 3 words

Do you have a talent or amazing experience to share?
Not so much a talent, but I've always been really interested in dance growing up, and a couple of years ago I had the opportunity to try out and be on the U of A Dance Team. It was an amazing experience for me to be part in something I've always loved and to get out of my comfort zone.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?

I'm a really big visual learner, so I like to summarize information chapter by chapter in flow charts, diagrams, images, etc., as well as make connections between each chapter with these diagrams. It's a great way to retain information as well as good tool to use when reviewing before exams.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience to share?
I have a talent for getting lost. This is often an inconvenient talent, but sometimes it leads to wonderful adventures.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
The best technique I learned throughout my undergrad was simply to stop procrastinating. Taking the time to break down big essays and projects into smaller components was a lot more effective and less stressful than worrying about how something was going to get done and putting it off.

What language(s) do you speak and write?
English, French and a tiny bit of Italian.

    Describe yourself in 3 words
    Enthusiastic, kind, and passionate.

    Describe yourself in 3 words

  • Mark
    Year of study
    4

    Faculty, Program/Area of study
    Arts, Psychology and Sociology

What do you like/love about your program?
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the program, I am able to choose from a wide selection of diverse courses that can build on my understanding of human behaviour. I can learn how the brain works and operates from both a biological and sociocultural perspective!

    What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I’m absolutely fascinated with movies and filmmaking. Whether it’s a relatively obscure indie flick or the most recent Hollywood blockbuster, I try to keep up with them as much as possible. I enjoy reading comic books, listening to podcasts, and playing games at the arcade. You might also find me at the gym sometimes!

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
I have a soft spot for New York City. It’s my favourite place to go on vacation and I just love the general atmosphere of the city. I had the opportunity to pass the Manhattan Bridge late at night. The roaring breeze and spectacular views of both Chinatown and the Lower East Side made for an absolutely memorable experience.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
Just start! Even if you don’t have any major exams coming right up, you can always do some quick, bite-sized study sessions. Reading a few pages of the textbook before class or making flashcards right after class can help make studying for tests more manageable!

What language(s) do you speak or write?
English, Filipino, Spanish, and some conversational French.

    Describe yourself in 3 words
    Outgoing, Empathetic, Friendly.
  • Shuai

    Year of study
    1

    Faculty, Program/area of study
    Nursing After Degree Program

What do you like/love about your program?
I am just starting out (year 1 of 2), so at this point, I got nothing to base it off of. But I am super looking forward to being able to learn more about the world of health care, and what it means to work in an area related to human services.

    What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I am an avid science geek, who loves to share a fun trivia fact or two when the moment is opportune. I'm also a big fan of coffee and tea (reflected in my part time job), and with that, baking pastries!

Do you have a talent or amazing experience to share?
I'm the most random individual I know in terms of conversations, and can start a discussion about almost anything, with the right people and right moment. Once, when I was talking to my friends, we were talking about weekend plans, and I started a debate about metronomes (the rhythm device). As I once said: if my mind was a computer, it would be a random number generator.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
I am a visual and kinesthetic learner, so I mainly learn by making flow charts, making and reviewing flash cards, color coding, and making up word or visual mnemonics for certain concepts.

What language(s) do you speak and write?
English is definitely my dominant language, although I can speak common Mandarin (no slang), and read/write at a grade 3-4 level.

    Describe yourself in 3 words
    Candid, Talkative, Geeky.

  • Zoë
    Year of study

    Faculty, Program/Area of study
    Science, Psychology Specialization

What do you like/love about your program?
I didn’t expect to be getting a Psychology Degree. Honestly, I took a psychology course as an elective in my second year and found myself reading unassigned articles in my spare time. I thought that was a sign that I should pursue more courses in the field. The more courses I take, the more I am intrigued. I love learning about the human mind and behaviour as I want to better understand others and myself. In my program, I get to explore external and internal factors that shape who we are and become. I consider myself lucky to be studying what I love.

    What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
People have hobbies while in University?! I’m joking (somewhat). In my spare time, I like visiting with my friends, my dog (Kiwi; a boxer mastiff) or my family. We like to eat at new restaurants, play board or card games, go fishing, shop, and try new activities like escape rooms or ax throwing. When I’m alone, I enjoy painting, making jewelry, creating flower arrangements but mostly watching Netflix. In between semesters, I love traveling! I love exploring new cities and learning about other cultures. Traveling with the people I love is probably my favourite thing to do!

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?

In 2012, almost two years after the horrendous earthquake, I was able to spend two weeks in Haiti. Most of my time was spent in a traveling clinic where we would offer free medical services to the community we were in. The wreckage of the natural disaster was still apparent but the thing that I will always remember is the strong sense of community between the Haitians. Regardless of their circumstances, they worked together and loved each other. It really put things in perspective and will be an experience that I will cherish forever.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
I find it incredibly helpful to rewrite my notes in a word document. I categorize the topics and colour code the text. By categorizing the topics, I am able to see how ideas relate. By colour coding the text, I am able to further compress the information. For example, everything under the red heading is related to the heading, the blue topics are the main ideas in the heading and the purple words with their definitions are the most important terms within the topic. When I study the completed notes, I have highlighted what’s most important and find it easier to remember.

What language(s) do you speak or write?
    English

    Describe yourself in 3 words

    Organized, determined and compassionate.
  • Zoe K.

    Year of study
    4

    Faculty, Program/Area of study
    Bachelor of Science, Honors Psychology

What do you like/love about your program?
I like learning about psychology because I think it is a field in which every human being can benefit. Specifically, I have a strong interest in social psychology and interpersonal interactions. I enjoy the Honors program because I am able to conduct my own self directed research within my undergrad!

    What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I have a strong passion for music: I play cello in the University of Alberta Symphony Orchestra and am a board member of the non profit Early Music Alberta. When I’m not in orchestra rehearsal, I try to fit in bouldering at the climbing wall. A weekend trip to the mountains and time on my skis is always welcome as well.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
I just returned from a summer abroad conducting an internship in Berlin, Germany! I loved the city so much and worked within a cultural psychology research organization. Currently am planning on applying for masters programs in Berlin after I graduate; definitely made easier by my EU passport!

What is one helpful study technique that you use?

Personally, I will always be a fan of flashcards. Writing simplified notes on flashcards and the act of reviewing them has definitely improved my studying vastly. Also, finding those few friends who are very driven and focused helps create a study environment where you are encouraged to be the same!

What language(s) do you speak or write?

I love the mountains. So my favourite things to do are hiking, camping, and skiing. I also love dogs and I have two dogs at home who I miss very much.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
I have been on an 11 day overnight hike in the backcountry of the Yaha Tinda area and that was the most challenging and life changing experience I’ve encountered so far.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?

Study one subject until your brain stops working or you feel good about the material then take an hour nap before moving onto the next course. I also love flash cards and run through my sets usually twice a day so by exam time I feel familiar with everything that’s accumulated throughout the semester.

What language(s) do you speak or write?
    French and English

    Describe yourself in 3 words
    Adventurous. Happy. Committed.

  • Ankit

What do you like/love about your program?
First and most important it keeps me in field of academics, which give me enough time to practice my other hobbies. Second, I get to work independently and that too on environmental and energy issue. Finally, it is one of my career steps.

    What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
Whenever it comes to my interest only thing that comes to my mind is music. I play guitar, and literally spend hours to improve myself. I am still bad at it. I just won’t to remain in field of academics: Professor.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?

I am not talented but I am curiously motivated and hardworking. My first amazing experience was to arrive in Canada on New Year day when temperature was -35 degree Celsius, first ever encounter with snow and second to stand just below waterfalls in wells grey British Columbia.

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
During my undergrad I was more like study few nights before exams and enjoy all activities during semesters. But, now in masters I don’t have much to do during office hours, hence in order to spend time I solve assignments and unknowingly end up prepared before time.

What language(s) do you speak or write?

    Describe yourself in 3 words
    Affable, meticulous, mindful.

    Faculty, Program/Area of study
Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Thesis-based MA Human Geography

What do you like/love about your program?
Human geography at its core explores the socio-spatial dialectic. Essentially, humans change their environments and landscapes as a function of their culture, and then those landscapes and environments shape the people and societies that live within them. We shape space, and at the same time it shapes us.

    What are your interests/passions/hobbies?
I love Bollywood and Hindustani films. I even signed up for a Bollywood fusion dance class several years ago and am continuing with it this fall! I am hoping to visit a friend I made who came here for a co-op in New Delhi once I convocate.

Do you have a talent or amazing experience?
My unique talent is improvised theatre. I started with sketch comedy, and many of them were also improvisers. When a friend wanted to start a twitter-based improv show they asked me to join #yegprov. I can think on my feet and listen well after all those shows!

What is one helpful study technique that you use?
I make my own ‘Coles Notes’. I take all my notes from lectures, readings, and seminars and rewrite the most important bits into a small notebook when preparing for midterms or finals. Doing this helps me find my knowledge gaps, and is a quick refresher just before the test starts.
