Fresh Start Program Application Process

Updated: June 3, 2021

Students interested in entering the Fresh Start Program must complete a registration process, including the completion of a short eClass course and application forms. For the 2021-2022 Fresh Start Program with study beginning in Fall 2021, students must complete all parts of the registration process, including the admission application form, by 4:00 p.m. (Mountain time) on Friday, July 30, 2021.

Review and follow the steps below to complete your registration in the Fresh Start Program.

Step 1: Review your "Required to Withdraw" letter to determine your options

When you have been required to withdraw, your Faculty determines the options available to you:

  • If the Fresh Start Program was listed as an option in your letter: register for a Fresh Start Intake Session (see Step 2 below).
  • If you decide not to enter the Fresh Start Program: review other options available to you and consider these alternatives. Contact your Faculty for further information.
  • If the Fresh Start Program was not listed as an option in your letter: review other options available to you and consider these alternatives. Contact your Faculty for further information.

If you are appealing grades:

If you are appealing any of your grades, DO NOT wait until the appeal process is complete to apply to the Fresh Start Program. You should apply to the Fresh Start Program as soon as you receive your "Required to Withdraw" letter, even if you are appealing one or more of your grades. It takes time for appeal meetings to be scheduled and to receive the appeal decision. If your appeal(s) is successful, you can then withdraw from the Fresh Start Program. Registering for the Fresh Start Program now - while you also go through the appeal process - keeps your options open by ensuring that you do not miss the Fresh Start Program application deadline (in late July). For information on and assistance with the appeal process, contact the Office of the Student Ombuds.

If you need to delay your program start:

If you are interested in the Fresh Start Program, but may not be able to start in September, you should still apply to the Fresh Start Program as soon as you receive your "Required to Withdraw" letter. If you wish to delay your start date for Fresh Start, you may delay for one year (i.e., to start the next September) one time only.

PLEASE NOTE

  • you MUST discuss this option with and receive formal approval from the Faculty from which you received your "Required to Withdraw" letter.
  • you will NOT be eligible to enter the Fresh Start Program if you take any courses at other post-secondary institutions after receiving your “Required to Withdraw” letter and before you enter the Fresh Start Program.
Step 2: Enroll in Registration eClass Course

To enroll in the Fresh Start Program Registration eClass course, send an email to fstart@ualberta.ca with the subject line “eClass Registration.” Include your full name, University of Alberta Student ID, University of Alberta campus computing ID (CCID), and faculty of study in the email.

Within two business days, our office will email you instructions for accessing the eClass course.

Step 3: Obtain Unofficial Transcript

In order to complete the registration steps in eClass, you need to obtain a PDF of your unofficial University of Alberta transcript. To obtain your unofficial transcript, go to Bear Tracks and log in. Then, go to Academics, go to My Academics, and select Transcript.

The document title of your transcript PDF must include your last name and the word “transcript” (e.g., Smith_transcript).

Step 4: Complete the Registration eClass Course

When you receive the email instructions for completing the Fresh Start Program Registration eClass course, follow the instructions listed to self-enroll in the course. Please allow 2-3 hours to complete the registration steps.

Complete the registration steps in the Fresh Start Program Registration eClass course as soon as possible. You are only able to register for credit courses for Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 after you complete the Fresh Start Program registration process (including the application to Open Studies).

Step 5: Complete Open Studies Application

Once you complete the Fresh Start Program Registration you will receive an email with a link to the Open Studies Fresh Start application. Please complete this application form promptly. The non-refundable application fee is $75.

Check your U of A email frequently for communications about your application.

Step 6: Pay Fresh Start Program Fee

Once you complete the Fresh Start Program registration eClass course, the $500 Fresh Start Program fee will be added to your Bear Tracks account. To pay the fee, go to Bear Tracks and log in. Then, go to Financials and select Make a Payment.

Fee Payment Deadline: September 30, 2021, by 11:59 p.m. (Mountain time).

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Once paid, the Fresh Start Program fee is non-refundable.
  • If students are appealing their requirement to withdraw from their Faculty, they should complete the program fee payment after they receive their appeal decision; if their appeal decision is not received before September 30, 2021, they should complete the program fee payment by September 30, 2021.
  • If fees are not paid by the deadline, students will be temporarily suspended from the Fresh Start Cognitive Strategies eClass course until payment is received. The accounts of students with continued non-payment will be considered overdue and will be encumbered; for details, see Overdue Accounts: Withholding of University Documents and Denial of Registration in the Student Records section of the University Calendar.

If you are encountering financial difficulties, visit the Office of the Registrar Financial Support or contact Student Connect.

Step 7: Register for Credit Courses

In the Fresh Start Program, you will take a minimum of three (3) or a maximum of four (4) three-credit courses in both of the fall and winter terms (depending upon the Faculty that referred you to the Fresh Start Program).

Please Note:

  1. Before your receive your acceptance into Open Studies Fresh Start, plan your credit course schedule in Bear Tracks.
  2. You MUST receive your acceptance into Open Studies Fresh Start before you can complete your credit course registrations. The sooner you complete the Fresh Start Program registration process (including the Registration eClass course and application to Open Studies Fresh Start), the sooner you may register for credit courses.
  3. Once you receive your Open Studies acceptance notice, you MUST complete your credit course registration in Bear Tracks.
