Introduction to the project

The I Am Not My Gremlin!™ Mental Health Initiative was developed to increase awareness of mental health challenges, normalize the struggle and reduce the shame and stigma associated with struggling with mental health challenges, reduce isolation and increase healthy help-seeking behaviour and peer support.

The I Am Not My Gremlin!™ Mental Health Art Gallery is a collaborative initiative between the Days of Action Committee, and  World in Wonder, Integrity & Kindness™, a not-for-profit organization established by Psychologist and U of A Alumna Dr. Easter Yassa.

According to the I Am Not My Gremlin!™ initiative, your Gremlin is the negative voice inside you that criticizes you or makes you feel bad or shameful. It can also be the voice of a mental health challenge or illness with which you’re dealing.

I Am Not My Gremlin!™ invites us to externalize our Gremlin and allows us to better separate from, dialogue with, challenge, and shift our relationship with that which is causing us distress, emotional discomfort, or shame.

Externalizing, challenging, and mindful awareness of our Gremlin also allows us to begin to see, often for the first time, that the essence of who we are is greater than the mental health challenges that we may be experiencing and that we are not defined by it.

We invite you to contribute to the I Am Not My Gremlin!™ Mental Health Art Gallery. This Gallery will be a creative expression of the campus community’s mental health and wellness. Your participation in this gallery will help destigmatize mental health, contribute to normalizing that we all have gremlins, and increasing the understanding that we all have a mental health story and deserve kindness and compassion

How this relates to Happiness Day & Health Day
I Am Not My Gremlin!™ will take place during International Happiness Day and World Health Day activities. Research indicates that there are simple ways we can take charge of how much happiness we have in our lives. The I Am Not My Gremlin!™ initiative provides the opportunity to connect with our own happiness by understanding that who we are is much greater than the challenges that we may experience. We also know that mental health is connected to our overall health. Sharing our ongoing mental health story can also contribute to the health of our community, as it fosters a safe and destigmatized space to share experiences and ask for help.
