Bridges Orientation

Hosted by First Peoples’ House, Bridges Orientation is for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students who are new to the University of Alberta (U of A). Bridges Orientation will be held virtually through a combination of self-guided modules in eClass and live sessions via Zoom. Join us as we introduce you to the U of A and provide an overview of the services available to support your physical, mental (academic), emotional, spiritual and financial wellbeing. 

Bridges Orientation will give you the tools you need to be a successful learner and a healthy, well-balanced individual while studying at the U of A. 

Programming

During Bridges Orientation, you can expect to:

  • Learn about First Peoples’ House — meet the team and hear about our programs and services 
  • Hear from our Elders and learn about our cultural supports
  • Explore your faculty and connect with a Student Advisor
  • Learn about financial support options 
  • Learn valuable study strategies from the Academic Success Centre
  • Discover the U of A Library system
  • Check in on your emotional wellness and mental health and connect to relevant supports
  • Get physically active with Campus and Community Recreation 
  • Be inspired by author Richard Van Camp and other special guests
  • Learn about student groups like the Aboriginal Student Council and the Indigenous Graduate Students’ Association

Office of the Student Ombuds Presentation

2 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Join the Office of the Student Ombuds as they talk about their services. They offer information, advice, and support to students as they deal with academic, discipline, interpersonal, and financial issues related to their program.

Virtual Campus Tour 

Noon - 1 p.m.

Join Graduate Student Robin Howse as she takes you on a virtual tour of the buildings, art and spaces at the U of A that have, or seem to have, Indigenous or colonial ties.

 

Study Strategies I with the Academic Success Centre 

1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

The Study Strategies Sessions will provide an overview of the most effective strategies for university-level learning and what those strategies look like in practice. While our new remote environment might be unfamiliar and seem uncertain, research tells us that how the brain learns remains stable and predictable. NOTE: Pre-reading is required for this session!

U of A Library Presentation

2 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Learn how to get online help from the library for your assignments. Also covered will be researching the library's catalogue and databases, and how to get access to actual print books and other physical materials.

10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Meet our First Peoples’ House Student Wellness Worker and take away some tips for managing academic stress, along with learning some coping strategies to help manage your mental health wellness.

 

Student Financial Services Presentation

1 p.m. - 2 p.m.

During this presentation, you will learn about bursaries, emergency loans, scholarships & awards, government student loans and other financial matters that impact students. 

 

Virtual Faculty Booth Fair *

4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

The Faculty Booth Fair gives you the opportunity to learn more about your faculty and connect with a Student Advisor via a live chat.

Keynote Speech with Richard Van Camp

2 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Join the award-winning author and storyteller Richard Van Camp for a heartwarming and funny conversation. Richard is a proud member of the Dogrib (Thicho) Nation from Fort Smith, NWT. He has written many novels including The Lesser Blessed and his most recent Moccasin Square Gardens. We promise you will laugh, shed a few tears and have a lot of fun with Richard! He is one of our favorite human beings and is back by popular demand.
