Declaring Aboriginal Status

The University of Alberta is committed to the recruitment, retention and graduation of Aboriginal students and honours the Indigenous world view of education by respecting and supporting the voices and spirit of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students. To increase the representation of Aboriginal students our policy is aimed at increasing accessibility and providing assist to students in achieving their academic and personal goals. 

For this purpose, and in order to improve the assessment of the educational achievement of Aboriginal learners, we ask you to self-identify if you are of Aboriginal ancestry within the meaning of the Canadian Constitutional Act of 1982.

Prospective Students

The best way to experience what we have to offer is to visit one of our campuses. Through our Campus Visit program, UAlberta Ambassadors (current U of A students) can provide you with a campus tour and the inside scoop on what it's like to be a student here. You can also check out our first-year residence and connect with an Academic Advisor, including our Aboriginal Student Recruitment Coordinator.

New Students

Once you have been accepted, complete the following steps:

  • Apply for Housing
    If you are thinking about living on campus, the U of A has a variety of housing options available. Residence is a popular option — spaces can fill quickly! We also have designated housing for our Aboriginal students currently enrolled full-time.
  • Register for Bridges Orientation
    Orientation is your free introduction to campus and your respective Faculty based on a student perspective. Meet new friends, have fun and learn your way around campus. 
  • Registration
    Applicants who receive Early Admission will be assigned an enrollment appointment date and time in April. Enrollment appointments can be viewed in Bear Tracks. At this point, you are able to register in courses. 
  • Tuition and Confirmation Deposit
    New undergraduate students are required to pay a $500 deposit (i.e. a Tuition Deposit) after they've been offered admission, in order to be eligible to register in classes.
  • University Email/Bear Tracks
    Once you have applied to the U of A, you will be assigned a CCID and password which will give you access to your new U of A email account and the online student service portal Bear Tracks. Applicants and students are responsible for checking these accounts at least once a week for important University communications. Applicants should also check their "To Do List" in Bear Tracks to ensure that all important documents required in the application process are received at the U of A.
