Welcome to the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta
Fundamental to the work we do every day are our common goals and hopes:
To be good doctors who care for people, not cases. To be good teachers and mentors who celebrate successes and forgive mistakes. To be inquisitive scientists who take pride in our own discoveries as much as someone else’s. Yes, we sometimes grumble and butt heads, but we know full-well that not one of us could ever do this alone.
As department chair, I see the work, the successes, and sometimes the anxieties and struggles every day. I am in awe of the people in this department. Every bit of this work, whether at the bedside, in the clinic, in front of the computer, in a meeting or in the lab — all of it is needed.
What we receive from Albertans and Canadians in funding, respect, and trust, we want to give back by providing outstanding clinical care, by teaching medicine and medical science to their daughters and sons, and by developing and applying new knowledge across the full spectrum of medical research.
And sometimes we do this in rough seas:
"A ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."
~ John A. Shedd, Salt from My Attic, 1928.
