Recruitment, Selection and Retention

  • In collaboration with the university's Human Resource Services (HRS), we manage, consult, advise and provide support on all activities relating to:
    • Staff recruitment plans
    • Collective agreement considerations
    • Documentation requirements
    • The interview process, hiring, staff orientation, compensation and benefits
    • Ensuring the design and implementation of a uniform process and approach throughout the university.
    • Manage HR workforce planning and HR strategic planning activities, and work collaboratively with Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry

Learning and development

  • Advise management on training for staff, supervisors and management
  • Work with HRS on initiatives to enhance organizational effectiveness and learning
  • Identify learning needs across the department
  • Conduct or coordinate in-service training for staff, supervisors and management and work collaboratively with HRS and Learning Development office
  • Promote learning opportunities available via HRS programs and workshops, LearnCentre, and the Human Resources Development Fund

Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Process employee payroll and benefits upon verification of eligibility for employment
  • First point of contact for employees for time, attendance and payroll
  • Maintain payroll information including casual biweekly time and attendance, and personnel transactions such as new hire, termination, leave of absence, benefit deductions, etc.
  • Research and resolve pay and vacation accrual discrepancies and communicate results to staff and supervisors
  • Work with Supply Management Services to facilitate vendor transactions (ie: Contract for Services)

Employee Engagement and Retention

  • Provide HR management practices to support management and staff in achieving day-to-day goals
  • Develop a sense of team with staff and supervisors contributing to the organization's mission
  • Communicate the values of the Department of Medicine and provide management and staff with consistent process to follow
  • Update staff on organization issues through bimonthly support staff meetings and internal communications such as email, newsletters and Internet
  • Promote and facilitate culture-building activities such as the Professional Administration Day and Support Staff Forum

Performance Management

  • Foster a consistent approach and effective application of performance management at the University of Alberta
  • Provide advice with regards to policy, procedures and practices on annual professional and support staff probationary and performance reviews, promotions and increments and ensure managers understand how to conduct reviews effectively and in a timely manner
  • Provide ongoing support to supervisors with respect to coaching and managing staff by establishing clear communication of work expectations between the supervisor and the employee

Employee and Labor Relations

  • In collaboration with HRS, provide interpretive advice on matters related to the university's academic and support staff collective agreements and employment legislation
  • Develop effective strategies for managing performance, dealing with attendance and absenteeism issues, return-to-work issues, reasonable accommodation and effective workplace relationships
  • Advise management on recommended requirements for sound HR practice, including performance management, coaching, counselling and discipline of employees
  • Act as a key resource in managing position disruptions/layoffs
  • Implement proactive dispute resolution and problem solving strategies for addressing staff and organizational issues
  • Work to resolve issues, grievances and discrimination and harassment complaints; represent the department in the grievance process
  • Assist with investigations of issues and provide recommendations on appropriate action
  • Liaise with Health Promotion and Work Life Services on matters of attendance and disability management
  • Coordinate access to and delivery of Pension and Benefit Advisory Services to individual employees
  • Oversee the report and follow up of Workers Compensation Board claims or potential claims for employees and students​
