Welcome to the Endocrinology and Metabolism Residency Program at the University of Alberta.


Interview/CaRMS Specific Information 

The Endocrinology Residency Training Program at the University of Alberta requires completion of 3 years of Core Internal Medicine Training in order to be eligible. Residents must have successfully completed their LMCC examinations. 


A limited number of applicants will be selected for interview.  The aim of the interview is to get to know the candidates, their career goals and how they will fit into the Endocrinology Subspecialty Training Program at the University of Alberta. There will be an interview panel, and each candidate will be interviewed for 20-30 minutes (depending on the number of candidates chosen for interviews).

Welcome to Our Program

We offer two years of comprehensive Endocrinology training program leading to eligibility for Royal College certification in Endocrinology and Metabolism. The training program consists of General Endocrinology, Diabetes and Subspecialty Endocrinology clinics, consult services, community rotation and electives. CanMEDs 2015 have been incorporated in our Academic Curriculum. Residents are required to participate in call schedule throughout the two years program whether they are in clinic blocks or consult services.  

After completion of the 2-year program, the trainee will be well prepared to pursue a career in Clinical Endocrinology or undertake further subspecialty fellowship or research training. We encourage a program tailored to meet the needs of each subspecialty resident.

Residency at a Glance

We offer two years of comprehensive Endocrinology training program leading to eligibility for Royal College certification in Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Year 1

Year One:

The focus is on obtaining clinical skills in general endocrinology and diabetes with some time for clinical or research electives. Sub Specialty Residents (SSRs) participate in 1 in 3 home calls throughout the year.

Endocrinology Inpatient Consult Service (SSRs continue their clinics during consult rotation for longitudinal experience)  12-16 weeks
Endocrinology Longitudinal Clinic continuous
Diabetes Clinic 4-6 weeks
Endocrinology Outpatient Clinics
(includes subspecialty clinics)
8-12 weeks
Laboratory Medicine 2 weeks
Reproductive Endocrinology 4 weeks
Research, Scholarly Project or Elective 4 weeks
Vacation 4 weeks
Selective (Combination of Ophthalmology, Pathology, Radiology, Endocrine Surgery or Bioethics)  4 weeks
Community Clinic rotation  4 weeks
Year 2

Year Two:

The second year of the program is more flexible in order to allow the trainee to gain the necessary expertise most suited to his/her career goals. This year involves further inpatient and outpatient consultation experience with increasing responsibilities. The trainee may focus on areas of special interest. There are several subspecialty clinics (thyroid cancer, pituitary, neuroendocrine, obesity, subspecialty diabetes) that would be suitable for such focus. Eight weeks will be assigned for completion of a research project.  (this will be increased to twelve weeks if no weeks were assigned to research in the first year.) Sub Specialty Residents (SSRs) participate in 1 in 3 home call throughout the year.

We are a fully accredited program that follows the guidelines set out by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Call Responsibilities

Call is home call only, with the maximum call of 9 days per block and is remunerated as per the Resident Association contract. In R5 year residents work as Junior Attending.
