If so desired, the third year can be spent in either clinical or basic research training locally. During this time, the resident is encouraged to pursue an MSc in experimental medicine or epidemiology. The members of the division of gastroenterology have a wide variety of interests and expertise in basic and clinical research. Research projects can be tailored to an individual's eventual career plans depending upon whether one is interested in an academic career or clinical practice. A structured research mentoring process is in place during the core program to ensure success and competitiveness in securing national funding. Residents are also encouraged to pursue research training at outside institutions depending on the research focus, and availability of local expertise.
