Research Awards

The Department of Medicine has a number of research-related awards, scholarships and bursaries available to its students, trainees, and faculty members.

To be eligible for the DoM Faculty Awards, you must be affiliated with the Department of Medicine. Faculty can either nominate each other or self-nominate for each category.

Recipients are selected by the Department of Medicine Executive Committee, and they will be invited and acknowledged at the Department of Medicine Annual Dinner.

All nominations are due annually on March 15th for work done the previous calendar year. Please click on the award title in the accordion below to complete a nomination form.

Basic Science Publication Award

Terms of Reference

Publication in a top-ranked journal, with the work having been completed at the U of A and the award winner as PI.

  • Reviews that make major contributions are eligible, but adjudicators are asked to weigh original research more favourably.
  • Only papers published electronically and/or in hard copy in the previous calendar year will be eligible.
  • Only a single paper can be submitted per nominee.
  • The individual must be a member of the Department of Medicine

Clinical Investigation Publication Award

Terms of Reference

  • The Publication Award will be given to a scientist for a research publication in a top ranked journal, with the work having been completed at the U of A and the award winner as PI.

  • Only papers published electronically and/or in hard copy in the previous calendar year will be eligible.
  • Only a single paper can be submitted per nominee.
  • Nominations can be for an individual or a team who has/have brought recognition to the Department by such clinical innovation.
  • The individual must be a member of the Department of Medicine.

  • Part-time or full-time clinical faculty are eligible.
  • Only the senior or first author will be eligible in any one year.
  • Work published could be original research, basic or clinical, reports on clinical trials or drug studies, or a major review article.
  • Only papers published electronically and/or in hard copy in the previous calendar year will be eligible.
  • May not be awarded more than once to an individual within the last 10 years.

  • Exemplary achievements, where the work demonstrates a high degree of expertise, creativity, imagination, perseverance, and/or dedication.
  • The individual must be a member of the Department of Medicine for a minimum of five years.
  • May not be awarded more than once to an individual within the last 10 years.

Terms of Reference

  • To honour excellence in applied clinical scientific research.
  • The nominee must be actively engaged in research involving population or clinical epidemiology, health outcomes/health services research, or randomized control trials testing interventions or new discoveries.
  • Nominees who have conceived and developed innovative products or processes are also eligible.
  • The individual must be a member of the Department of Medicine.
  • May not be awarded more than once to an individual within the last 10 years.
