Stroke Fellowship Program

Stroke fellowship at the University of Alberta provides a comprehensive combined clinical and research vascular neurology training. The University of Alberta hospital is one of the major tertiary hospitals in the province and our state of the art stroke program caters to the entire northern Alberta, parts of British Columbia and northern territories. Our Telestroke program is one of the largest in the country serving many communities for close to 10 years. The Stroke Program presently has 8 stroke neurologists and one stroke internist. Every year 3-5 stroke fellows are recruited. Fellowship training is for 1-2 years with the possibility of extension, especially for those who want to pursue research/Masters. The research program is diverse and includes a spectrum of projects from basic science (studying mechanisms of focal ischemia and designing drug therapies for limiting neuronal damage) to clinical trials and observational studies. The fellows are encouraged to look into research projects of their own. There is an extensive clinical pool including over 1500 acute stroke visits to the emergency at the University of Alberta hospital, over 2400 visits to the AH Owen & Family Stroke Prevention Clinic and an expanded program in the city where other hospitals are involved in the critical care path for management of acute stroke.

There is significant emphasis on teaching with weekly Stroke Rounds, TCD rounds, weekly Intervention Stroke Rounds with neuro radiologists, monthly Stroke Journal Club and a very active in-patient stroke service at the University of Alberta hospital. Our philosophy of training is to provide an excellent academic and collegial environment to the fellows while promoting collaboration and respect for colleagues and empathy for the patients.

Applicants are welcomed who have successfully completed neurology training in Canada or USA. We also accept candidates who have successfully completed residency training in internal medicine. Foreign trained candidates in neurology and internal medicine are also eligible for stroke fellowship.
