Program Information

Year One: The focus is on obtaining clinical skills in general endocrinology and diabetes with time allotted for clinical or research electives.

  • Endocrinology Inpatient Consult Service - 16 weeks 
  • Endocrinology Longitudinal Clinic – continuous 
  • Diabetes Clinic – 6 weeks
  • Endocrine Outpatient Clinics – 12 weeks (includes subspecialty clinics) 
  • Laboratory Medicine - 2 weeks 
  • Reproductive Endocrinology – 4 weeks 
  • Elective/ Research or Scholarly project – 4 weeks 
  • Selective – 4 weeks (combination of Ophthalmology, Pathology, Radiology, Endocrine, Surgery or Bioethics) 
  • Vacation – 4 weeks 

Year two: The second year of the program is more flexible in order to allow the trainee to gain the necessary expertise most suited to his/her career goals.

The second year involves further inpatient and outpatient consultation experience with increasing responsibilities.

The trainee may focus on areas of special interest as there are several subspecialty clinics (thyroid, cancer, pituitary, neuroendocrine, obesity).

Elective time can be used for research.

  • Endocrinology Inpatient Consult Service – Junior attending - 8 weeks
  • Endocrinology Outpatient Clinics (includes subspecialty clinics) – 18 weeks
  • Longitudinal Clinic – continuous
  • Pediatric Endocrinology – 4 weeks
  • Diabetes Clinics – 6 weeks
  • Elective/Research or Scholarly project - 12 weeks
  • Vacation – 4 weeks

Call Responsibilities 

Call is home call only, with the maximum call of 9 days per block and is remunerated as per the Resident Association contract.

Hospitals 

The University of Alberta Hospital is the main hospital for Endocrinology. Endocrinology Outpatient Clinics at the University of Alberta take place in the Kaye Edmonton Clinics. 

Other training sites include the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Grey Nuns Community Hospital and Cross Cancer Institute.
