Research Day

The Annual Department of Medicine Research Day will take place on Thursday, May 25, 2017 and is one the department’s largest events showcasing over 90 graduate students, 30 postdoctoral fellows and 292 residents’ research being conducted over the past year. 

Abstract Submission

In order to participate, all trainees are asked to submit their abstract via the online abstract submission starting January 27th, 2017 until 23:59:59 MST, Sunday March 5th, 2017. 

Please be sure to carefully read the Abstract Submission Guidelines before submitting your abstract.

Desired oral presentation type abstract submissions are judged by DoM research intensive members. There are 5 available time slots per category (Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Fellows, Core Internal Medicine Residents and Senior Subspecialty Residents). The top 5 highest scores in each category will be invited to present an oral presentation. Everyone one else will be invited to present a poster.

Oral Presentations

8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Classroom D (WMC 2F1.04 )

Each oral presenter will be given 10 minutes to present their research followed by 5 minutes of Q&A from the judges and audience. There will be a practice session the day before, Wednesday May 24th, 2017 between 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. in Classroom D (WMC 2F1.04). 

*Please note the computer that the presentations will be loaded onto will be a PC with Windows 7 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2010. If you are creating your presentation on a Mac it’s highly recommended you get it in for testing as soon as possible.

*Please also note the practice session is not the time to make changes to your presentation or to submit a new version. The use of the computer/projector is on a first come, first serve basis so there is not time to make changes as this could cut into someone else’s time to practice.

Poster Presentations

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. John W. Scott Health Sciences Library (Lower-Level), WMC 2K3.28

Posters will be adjudicated by faculty members of the DoM at random between 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Please be sure to be available for the judges. If you are not present when they arrive, your poster will not be adjudicated and you will be ineligible for the prize. Poster boards will be available on Wednesday May 24th, 2017 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. to set up your poster. Poster boards are 4’high by 6’ wide so create your poster accordingly. Posters will be on exhibit all day on Thursday May 25th, 2017 and it will be your responsibility to remove your poster from the board after 4:00 p.m. Any posters left on the board after will be discarded.

  1. Clarity and Justification of the Research Question/Hypothesis
  2. Appropriateness of the Methods Used to Answer the Question/Hypothesis
  3. Validity and Relevance of the Results to the Question/Hypothesis
  4. Quality of the Discussion and Conclusion
  5. Innovation Impact
  6. Visual Layout and Visual Impact of the Poster
  7. Oral Responses to the Adjudicators’ Questions

Research Day Prizes

The top scoring oral & poster presentations will be awarded $500 in each category at the Award Ceremony as follows:

1st Prize Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Fellow Oral Presentation
1st Prize Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Fellow Poster Presentation

1st Prize Core/Subspecialty Resident Oral Presentation
1st Prize Core/Subspecialty Resident Poster Presentation

To be eligible for prizes, the trainees must be engaged in research within the Department of Medicine or have a supervisor/co-supervisor affiliated with the Department of Medicine as one of the following:

  • a graduate student enrolled in a graduate program of study;
  • a postdoctoral fellow (post-PhD);
  • a post-health professional degree fellow (e.g. core internal medicine resident, senior subspecialty resident, clinical and/or research fellow)

Paul Man Award

The Paul Man Award is in honor of Dr. Paul Man, Division Director of Pulmonary Medicine from 1986 to 2001 for his exceptional contribution to translational research. Upon selecting to be considered for the Paul Man Award, each trainee is required to submit one-paragraph describing their contribution to translational research. Please click here for details.

Award Ceremony

4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Bernard Snell Hall, Upper Foyer

The prizes for each category will be presented to the trainees along with the Paul Man Award by the Chair of the Department of Medicine, Graduate Education Advisor and Residency Program Director.

Official certificates will be presented at the DoM Annual Dinner.
