Undergraduate Scholarships and Awards


In addition to the many scholarships, awards and bursaries available to all students at the University of Alberta and within the Faculty of Arts, the Department of Drama offers several different Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships specifically for students within our undergraduate Drama programs. 

To qualify for any award students must be continuing their studies at the University of Alberta next year. Awards are made by Nomination from the Department of Drama. The Student Awards Committee bases its nominations on the student’s academic standing as well as additional criteria as dictated by specific awards. Award amounts may fluctuate according to market conditions.

Universiade
Field of Study: Drama

Conditions: Awarded annually to an undergraduate student with demonstrated excellence in fine arts and superior academic achievement on a full normal course load.

Frank Bueckert Prize
Field of Study: Drama – Playwriting
Value: $500
Number: 1
Conditions: Awarded annually to an undergraduate student who demonstrates aptitude and promise in playwriting courses taken in the Department of Drama on the basis of superior academic achievement in those courses. This award may be offered to a part-time, full-time or graduating student.Donor: Endowed by the Department of Drama from donations to the Frank Bueckert Fund and proceeds of the Studio Theatre Frank Bueckert Scholarship Performance in honour of his retirement from the Department.

Citadel Theatre Award
Field of Study: Drama
Value: Two season subscriptions to the Citadel Theatre
Number: 10
Conditions: Awarded annually to outstanding students in Drama. If there is no suitable candidate no award will be made.

The Royle Harris Scholarship in Drama
Value: $750
Number: 1

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student entering the third or fourth year of studies in the Faculty of Arts majoring in Drama (BFA acceptable as well). Recipient will be selected on the basis of superior academic standing with preference given to a student with a demonstrated financial need.

James DeFelice Scholarship
Field of Study: Drama
Value: Variable (to a maximum of $1000)

Conditions: To be awarded annually to an undergraduate student with superior academic achievement entering the final year of the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program majoring in Drama. Recipient will be selected on the basis of excellence in Drama and on academic standing. Extracurricular involvement in various areas of theatre will also be taken into consideration.

Sheila M. Edwards Scholarship in Drama
Field of Study: Drama
Value: $750
Number: 1
Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement who has completed the second year of studies in the BFA Program in Acting and who is entering the third year of studies in the same program the following September. Recipient will be selected on the basis of excellence in acting, theatrical potential, and academic standing on a full normal course load.

Sandra Faye Guberman Memorial Scholarship
Field of Study: Acting
Value: $600

Conditions: To be awarded annually to an outstanding student entering the final year of the BFA Acting Program. Selection will be made by the BFA Acting Committee on the basis of high academic achievement in the core courses.

Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Scholarship

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student entering second, third, or fourth year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting or Design on the basis of academic attainment, artistic or professional achievement, and contribution and achievement above and beyond class and assigned work.

I.A.T.S.E. Local #210 Memorial Scholarship
Field of Study: Drama Technical Theatre Program

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the final year of the BFA Technical Theatre program, Technical Production route. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing.

Shoctor Prize in Drama
Field of Study: Fine Arts in Drama

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama program on the basis of superior academic achievement.

Steve Yorke Memorial Award

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student entering the 3rd year of the BFA Acting Program on the basis of overall development and artistic or professional achievement and satisfactory academic standing.

Tristan Mi Tian Award in Acting

Conditions: Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing entering the final year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program majoring in Acting. Selection based on demonstrated excellence in acting, demonstrated theatrical potential and academic standing. 

Terrance Rowswell-O'Connor Award in Drama
Field of Study: Fine Arts
Value: $2,500
Number: 2
Conditions: Awarded to students with satisfactory academic standing entering the third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama (Acting) degree. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated interest and involvement in the areas of fitness, health and lifestyle improvement.
Funded by: The Terrance Rowswell-O'Connor Award Fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation

UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS (which include financial need)


For the following four awards, the application form must be accompanied by a letter to the Chair which should contain a short statement explaining financial need. How the student chooses to explain or detail financial need is left to you to define, in order to avoid intrusiveness.

Friends of the Theatre Bursaries
Field of Study: Drama
Value: Variable to a maximum of $3,000

Conditions: To be awarded to students entering either of the final two years of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama Program on the basis of academic standing and financial need.
Donor: Endowed by Friends of the Theatre

Houselighters of the Citadel Theatre Awards
Field of Study: Open
Value: $2,250
Number: 2
Conditions: To be awarded annually to Alberta residents entering the third year of studies in an undergraduate degree program on the basis of satisfactory academic standing and proficiency in Drama. Recipients must also show excellent potential to excel in the field of Drama. Preference will be given to students in financial need.
Donor: Endowed in 1994 by the Houselighters of the Citadel Theatre to encourage promising students to further their careers in the field of Drama.

Alan and Mickey Macdonald Bursary in Drama
Field of Study: Drama
Value: $500
Number: 1
Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with satisfactory academic standing registered in any program in the Department of Drama. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of financial need and excellence in Drama.

Ruth Timms Nishioka Scholarship in Drama
Field of Study: Drama
Value: $6,000 variable
Conditions: To be awarded annually to one or more students with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree programs, with a major in Drama. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing in Drama courses taken to date, leadership, participation in extracurricular Drama activities, and demonstrated financial need.
