Language Advising

Chinese

If you have not taken Chinese at the University of Alberta, you need to attend one of our language screening sessions (read more) or contact the Chinese language Coordinaor:

IMPORTANT NOTE ON PREREQUISITES AND COURSE SELECTION

When selecting courses, please be sure to check the prerequisites for each course you wish to take. Prerequisites are indicated in the individual course listings in the University of Alberta Calendar. Course prerequisites are in place for a reason: for certain courses, you need background knowledge from lower-level courses. As a result, prerequisites cannot normally be waived unless you have taken equivalent courses at other institutions. It is the student's responsibility to take these prerequisite requirements into account, and to plan his/her academic schedule accordingly. If you register for a course without having the prerequisites, your course registration may be cancelled or you may be denied credit for the course after the fact.

There are following undergraduate awards available from the Department:

1. Guy Stuart Phillips Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: East Asian Studies
Value $350
Number: 1

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a Canadian citizen with superior academic achievement entering second, third or fourth year in East Asian Studies. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing and financial need. The objective of this award is to encourage individuals not familiar with the culture, history, etc., of East Asia to study in this area.

Donor: Endowed by Friends and family of the late Guy Stuart Phillips.

2. Chinese Graduates Association of Alberta

Chinese Studies Scholarship
Field of Study: Chinese Studies
Value: $1,000
Number: 1

Conditions: To be awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement to a student completing second or third year of Chinese Studies.

Donor: Endowed by the Chinese Graduates Association of Alberta. Apply: By nomination from the Department of East Asian Studies.

3. Chinese Graduates Association of Alberta

Graduating Scholarship
Field of Study: Open
Value: $750
Number: 1

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a graduating student on the basis of superior academic achievement in the area of Chinese Studies who intends to continue in an M.A. program in the same area of study at the University of Alberta.

Donor: Endowed by the Chinese Graduates Association of Alberta. Apply: By nomination from the Department of East Asian Studies.

4. Chinese Community Scholarship

Field of Study: Chinese Studies
Value: $500

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the second year of studies in the Faculty of Arts majoring in Chinese Studies. This scholarship is open to students in all Chinese programs in East Asian Studies. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing on a full normal course load and financial need. Students who are already in receipt of other awards totalling $2,000 or more are not eligible for this scholarship.

Donor: Endowed through funds raised from the Melody of Spring concert hosted by the Chinese community in 1998. Apply: By nomination from the Department of East Asian Studies.

5. East Asian Studies Scholarship

Field of Study: East Asian Studies
Value: $2,500

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievements entering the second, third, or fourth year of studies majoring in East Asian Studies. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic standing. Preference will be given to students whose primary focus of study is on China and/or who are in financial need.

6. Tatsuo Ozawa Scholarship in Japanese Studies

Field of Study: Japanese Studies, East Asian Studies
Value: $1,000

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering third or fourth year honours or major in Japanese Studies. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of academic standing.

Donor: Endowed by the University of Alberta to commemorate the Honourable Dr. Tatsuo Ozawa's ongoing commitment to the University of Alberta and his efforts at furthering international relations between Japan and Canada. Apply: By nomination from the Department of East Asian Studies.
