Details about Chinese Language Classes

CHINA 101
Chinese for beginners. No native speakers allowed. If you have no background in Chinese, register for section A2 or A4. If you have Chinese heritage background but are still a beginner, you may only register for section A1 or A3. Contact the department for a language evaluation if you are unsure what course to take. The department reserves the right to remove students from courses not appropriate to their level.
CHINA 102
For students who took China 101. If you were in section A2 or A4 of CHINA 101, register for B2 or B4 here. If you were in A1 or A3, register for B1 or B3 here. If you did not take Chinese 101 at the University of Alberta, contact the department for a language evaluation.
CHINA 201
For students who took China 102. If you were in section B2 or B4 of China 102, register in section A2 here. If you were in section B1 or B3 of China 102, register in section A1 here. If you did not take China 102 at the University of Alberta, contact the department for a language evaluation.
CHINA 202
For students who took China 201. If you were in section A2 of CHINA 201, register for B2 here. If you were in section A1, register for B1 here. If you did not take China 201 at the University of Alberta, contact the department for a language evaluation.
CHINA 211
Section A1 is for speakers of Cantonese or other Chinese dialects who wish to learn Mandarin. Only students who were born in Canada or who moved to Canada before grade 5 are eligible. Section A2 is for advanced Mandarin speakers who do not know how to read or write. Students who can read more than 20 Chinese characters are not eligible.
CHINA 212
Section B1 is for speakers of Cantonese or other Chinese dialects who wish to learn Mandarin. Only students who were born in Canada or who moved to Canada before grade 5 are eligible. CHINA 250 (formerly EASIA 201)
The course is designed for Chinese language learners at beginner and intermediate levels. The course provides knowledge and language exercises that will help you understand Mandarin sentence structures, enhance your self-awareness of the Chinese language learning process, and increase your communication skills in Mandarin. No native speakers allowed.
CHINA 301
For students who took China 202. If you were in section B2 of China 202, register in section A2 here. If you were in section B1, register in section A1 here. If you did not take China 202 at the University of Alberta, contact the department for a language evaluation.
CHINA 302
For students who took China 301. If you were in section A2 of CHINA 301, register for B2 here. If you were in section A1, register for B1 here. If you did not take China 301 at the University of Alberta, contact the department for a language evaluation.
CHINA 401
For students who took China 302. If you had 12 years of bilingual education in Edmonton public schools, you may also be eligible for this class. Contact the department for a language evaluation if you are not sure.
CHINA 402
For students who took China 401. If you did not take China 401 at the University of Alberta, contact the department for a language evaluation.
CHINA 407
