Economics instructors honoured at the Faculty of Arts Celebration of Excellence held May 3, 2018

Valentina Galvani, Alexander Gainer and Mesbah Sharaf receive teaching awards for their excellent contributions.

Congratulations are in order to three of the Department's excellent instructors. Valentina Galvani, Alexander Gainer, and Mesbah Sharaf all received teaching awards from the Faculty of Arts and were honored at the annual Celebration of Excellence held at the Faculty Club on the evening of May 3, 2018.

 

Valentina Galvani

Valentina Galvani was awarded the University's Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching. Valentina is not only a great teacher but has worked very hard to obtain internships for many graduate students. She has a passion for teaching, learning, and puts students first. Currently Valentina holds the position of Associate Professor with tenure in the Dept. of Economics.and is the Associate Chair, Undergraduate for the Department of Economics. Her research expertise and training are those of a Financial Economist.

 

Dean of Arts Lesley Cormack, Alexander Gainer, Rick Szostak

Alexander Gainer received the Faculty of Arts 2018 Contract Teaching Award. Alexander worked for several years in finance and public policy before joining the University of Alberta to teach Economics. Primarily teaching Microeconomics, Macroconomics and Econometrics at the first and second year level, he is passionate about helping people learn economics and particularly enjoys being the first person to introduce students to the economics discipline.

Dean of Arts Lesley Cormack, Mesbah Sharaf, Rick Szostak

Mesbah Sharaf was given the Faculty of Arts 2018 Undergraduate Teaching Award. Mesbah is a full time faculty lecturer and joined the Dept. of Economics in July 2014. His research interest lies in applied Econometrics spanning topics in Health Economics and Economic Developments. He teaching a variety of Economics courses at the introductory and intermediate levels such as Microeconomics, Macroconomics and Econometrics. He has been described by his students as being an amazing professor who genuinely cares about his students.
