Master of Arts in Economics and Finance (Course Based)

Course Requirements

  • 6 mandatory courses (ECON 503, 581, 598, and 599, FIN 501 and a 500 level ACCTG course)
  • 7 graduate level field courses - four 500 level ECON courses and three 500 or 600 level FIN courses.
  • ECON 999 - students will be registered by the Department in ECON 999 and for their independent research project once they have successfully completed all required course work.  ECON 999 is under the supervision of a Faculty member and includes a presentation by the student and feedback by the supervisor and the students' peers.  The paper should not normally exceed 50 pages and is only offered in Spring term.

  • Students are required to take at least 3 courses (9 credits) per term to maintain full-time status.

*In lieu of one of the options, students are also required to take a 500 level ACCTG course.  The remaining field course requirements are 4 ECON and 3 FIN graduate level courses.

**If students fail or wish to upgrade the mark on their research paper in ECON 999, they are given the opportunity to resubmit the paper for a chance to upgrade their mark.

Students will register for courses via Bear Tracks after they have accepted their offer of admission with the exception of Business (FIN and ACCTG) courses and ECON 999.  To request registration in a Business course, please contact your Graduate Advisor at econgrad@ualberta.ca.  

Professional Development and Academic Integrity & Ethics Requirements

Students must complete 8 hours of ethics training, 8 hours of professional development, and an Individual Development Plan.  Refer to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research website under Professional Development.

Time Limit for Completion

Students in our MA Economics and Finance program typically complete within 2 years.  Students are required to complete the IDP portion of the Professional Development requirement by the end of Spring Reading Week in the first year.  All requirements (course work, Academic Integrity & Ethics and Professional Development) within 4 years from the time they first register in the program.  Students must complete all course work ethics and professional development requirements to be eligible to convocate.
