The Master of Education in Educational Studies (MES) is a two-year, part-time, course-based program for working educators who want to pursue graduate studies without taking a leave from their careers. To optimize the learning experience, the program is cohort-based.
The program is designed for teachers, educational administrators, and educational leaders who want to enhance their knowledge and practice in the areas of leadership and school improvement. The MES provides students with opportunities to develop educational research skills and apply them in educational contexts of particular interest to them. Highly qualified, enthusiastic faculty ensure exceptional levels of individualized support for students as they investigate their own topic(s) of educational interest.
Year 1 of the program begins with a 3-week, face-to-face summer residency (typically occur in July). Students complete two required courses.
During each of the following Fall and Winter semesters, students complete an online core course, delivered asynchronously, enabling them to work from their home communities at their convenience.
In addition, students complete two graduate-level, 3-credit electives. Electives can be completed at the University of Alberta or any other accredited university. All electives must be approved by FGSR.
Pending sufficient enrollment, MES summer residencies are offered in a variety of locations in the province and beyond. Please contact the MES Graduate Administrator for more information on this year's locations.
