Congratulations to Dr. Jerrold Kachur on his Retirement

After 23 years of service the department bid farewell to Jerry Kachur as he begins his retirement.

05 November 2019

Dr. Jerrold "Jerry" Kachur retired in August after 23 years as a faculty member in the Department of Educational Policy Studies. He described his immediate plans as spending more time with his grandchildren, and to "exercise more, eat less, and avoid all university email, admin meetings, and tech workshops!" Dr. Kachur was appointed as an Assistant Professor in 1996, following ten years of teaching in public schools. As a faculty member in the Social Justice and International Studies in Education specialization, he supervised 26 graduate students and was a member of numerous supervisory committees. In 2013 Dr. Kachur was the recipient of the University of Alberta Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and the Faculty of Education Graduate Teaching Award. In a story in Illuminate: The Faculty of Education's Magazine, he summed up his philosophy of teaching in this way: "It's important to focus on teaching people, not subjects. For students to be successful, we must be concerned for them as human beings. They face all kinds of pressures - family, relationship, stress - it's important to recognize that."

On October 18, 2019, the Department gathered in celebration of his career and retirement.

We thank Jerry for his many contributions to the Department and Faculty and wish him well for a wonderful retirement.
