Statement on the Passing of Dr. Jerry Kachur

A statement on behalf of Dean Tupper, Dr. Larry Prochner, and Dr. Jorge Sousa.

It is with deep regret and sadness that we share news of Dr. Jerry Kachur's sudden passing. Only last year Jerry retired from the Department of Educational Policy Studies, after 23 years of impactful contributions to teaching, research and service. He is survived by his extended family, his children, and partner Dr. Macris.

Following ten years of public school teaching, Dr. Kachur commenced his career at University of Alberta in 1996 as a Professor of Cultural Geopolitical Economy and Comparative Social and Political Theory. Some of his many research interests included globalization, the politics of knowledge, socioeconomic inequality, intellectual property rights, the commercialization of higher education and the history and philosophy of critical social science.

Jerry will be particularly remembered as a popular instructor with both undergraduate and graduate students. He supervised a great number of M.Ed. and PhD students, and was the recipient of the 2013 U of A Award For Excellence in Graduate Teaching and the Faculty of Education Graduate Teaching Award. Dr. Kachur served as Faculty Liaison with the Latin American Research Centre at UCLA, as well as on various committees such as Ethics Review, Undergraduate Course Development, Academic Appeals and Advisory Selection.

Jerry was a good friend to many of us and will be sadly missed. Please accept our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Kachur's students and all faculty and staff who knew and worked closely with him.

Once funeral arrangements and a public notice are shared, we will be sure to pass this information on to you.

Sincerely,

Jennifer, Larry and Jorge
