Apply to the Program

Program Criteria 

In order to be considered for the MES program, you must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • A four-year baccalaureate degree with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 6.5 (9 grade point scale) or 3.0 (4.0 grade point scale) over the last 60 credits of course work
  • Two years of full-time teaching experience

International students must demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the following:

  • A TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based), (237 computer-based) or a total score of 93 with a score of at least 24 on speaking and writing and 20 on reading and listening (Internet-based)
  • An IELTS overall score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.5 on each band
  • A PTE score of 63

You will need the following to apply to the MES program:

  1. Letter of intent (about 1,000 words) outlining your reasons for pursuing a graduate degree and area(s) of interest as potential research topics*

  2. A 1-paragraph biography outlining your professional and/or personal information as you are comfortable* 

  3. Copy of official transcript(s) from each post-secondary institution you attended (including incomplete studies, exchange and transfer credit courses). You do not need to submit transcripts for work completed at the University of Alberta
  4. A 1-2 page résumé showing a minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience and other relevant experience

  5. Two letters of professional recommendation attesting to your academic aptitude and commitment to your profession

  6. Completed Technology Compliance Checklist

  7. Completed Student Information Record

  8. English Language Proficiency documentation (international students only)

 *If you are accepted into the program, this will be shared with MES faculty.

Once You Receive a Conditional Offer of Admission

Because they are copies, transcripts uploaded on the online application portal are considered to be unofficial documents. Your conditional offer of admission will require you to provide  an official transcript(s). Only transcripts sent directly from the post-secondary institution to the FGSR office are deemed to be official. Contact the post-secondary institution to request that a transcript(s) be sent directly to:
