Updated Alarm and Evacuation Testing Procedure

University buildings may be evacuated for a variety of reasons, including fire, weather emergencies, hazardous material releases or bomb threats.

Familiarize yourself with the evacuation route and designated muster (gathering) point. You can find this information on the signs posted next to elevators and stairwells in university buildings.

An evacuation alarm will either use a standard pattern of three half-second sounds, followed by a one and one half-second pause OR will use continuous alarm bells.

When a evacuation alarm sounds or you are told to evacuate the building:

  1. Leave the building immediately through the nearest marked fire exit. Do NOT use elevators. Close doors behind you.
  2. As you leave, accompany visitors and alert others.
  3. Once outside the building, move to the muster point.
  4. Notify your supervisor or emergency responders if you suspect that someone is still inside.
  5. Do NOT re-enter the building until permitted to do so by emergency responders.

If you cannot  evacuate for mobility reasons:

  • Report to the nearest emergency exit stairwell and remain there, or
remain in place if it is safe to do so
If you cannot get to an emergency exit stairwell and can access an enclosed space such as an office, do so and then contact Protective Services or 911. If you cannot get into an enclosed space, proceed to the elevator lobby.
  • Alert Protective Services at 780-492-5050

If you are unable to evacuate because a clinical or experimental procedure is underway:

  • Begin to shut down your work
  • Alert Protective Services
