NAIT Technical Training
The Northern Alberta Institute for Technology (NAIT) in partnership with the Faculty of Engineering is offering technical courses that can greatly benefit undergraduate and graduate students. These professional development courses can open doors to the job market as well as greater access to the machining equipment in Engineering facilities for courses or as maker spaces (check with each facility lead prior to working with any equipment). Graduate students can use these towards up to 4 hours FGSR professional development requirements.
These courses will allow students to gain access to the Engineering Garage. University of Alberta Drill Press and Saw courses are offered by the Engineering Garage to all interested. Please contact Roger Marchand at marchand@ualberta.ca to sign up. Graduate students only interested in the NAIT workshops can register directly.

MACH169 - LATHE STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA STUDENTS
Course Overview: This course is designed to help prepare University of Alberta students for the safe and effective use of the Engineering Garage makerspace. Introductory topics covered will include safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), followed by overviews of lathe operations, dimensional measurement, lathe nomenclature, cutting conditions, materials, and a demonstration of internal threading. Successful completion of the U of A's Drill Press and Saw course is considered a prerequisite.

MACH170 - MILLING MACHINE STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA STUDENTS
Course Overview: This course is designed to help prepare University of Alberta students to use the machine shop in the Engineering Garage makerspace in a mentor-supervised environment. Introductory topics covered will include basic safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), and hazard assessments. From there, students will receive an entry-level overview of dimensional measurement, milling machine nomenclature, cutting conditions, machine operations, and materials. A demonstration of gear cutting will also be included. Successful completion of the U of A's Maker Workshop Band Saw and Drill Press Training course is considered a prerequisite.
