Hazardous Materials Release or Exposure
An uncontrolled release of hazardous materials—such as chemicals, infectious agents, or radiological substances—that pose a risk to human health and to the environment. Accidental exposure to a hazardous substance may also require an emergency response.
In case of a large spill (more than 5 L) of hazardous or unknown materials
- Alert others in the immediate area.
- Assist any injured people if it is safe to do so.
- Call 911 and then Protective Services (780-492-5050).
- If instructed, pull the fire alarm to evacuate the building.
- Go to the building muster point.
- Do NOT re-enter the building until permitted to do so by emergency responders.
In case of a gas leak
- Exit the space immediately. Do NOT turn electrical switches on or off.
- Call 911 and then Protective Services (780-492-5050).
- If instructed, leave the building, alerting others as you go.
- Do NOT re-enter the building until permitted to do so by emergency responders.
If you have been exposed to a hazardous chemical
- Flush exposed area with water for at least 15 minutes (using an emergency shower or another source of continuous spray).
- Call the Poison & Drug Information Service (1-800-332-1414) and follow instructions.
If you have been exposed to radioactive or biohazardous materials
- Contact the Control Centre (780-492-5555) and request a call back from Health, Safety & Environment.
- Seek medical treatment immediately.
