Yellowknife, Northwest Territories
Overview
The Northwest Territories (NWT) Residency Program based out of Yellowknife will offer residents a mixture of urban, rural, and remote training, providing the clinical courage and competence to work anywhere in Canada. As a resident you will:
- Gain comprehensive acute care skills in Emergency, Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Trauma
- Work with Integrated Primary Care Teams in Yellowknife
- Receive dedicated cultural competency training
- Develop outstanding skills in virtual care
- Gain unique and exciting clinical experiences in our Integrated Women’s Health curriculum
- Learn from a group of Family Physicians with broad scopes of practice (e.g. GP Anaesthesia, EM, Surgical Skills, OB) as well as work alongside a variety of specialist physicians
- Travel to Alberta PEDS ER, CCU, GIM, ICU, Geriatrics, Palliative blocks
This exciting program focuses on rural and remote care by maximizing the amount of time spent in the communities of the NWT—accessible by highway, gravel road, ice road, or fly-in-only. Each resident is assigned a community to regularly support over the two-year program via travel clinic. Our program has two Rural Community blocks earmarked for Iqaluit, Nunavut, and two blocks in Canada’s northernmost hospital in the Arctic. Residents work in clinical settings with populations ranging from 150 to 20,000. Residents work in clinics, in the Stanton Territorial Hospital, regional hospitals, community health centres…and possibly even inside a “health cabin!”
The residency program is based in Yellowknife, an active and vibrant city with access to shopping, entertainment, recreational facilities and vast wilderness just steps from your front door. Outdoor activities like camping, fishing, biking, paddling, golfing, snowmobiling, fat biking and cross-country skiing are all easily accessible. Most importantly, we have dedicated and passionate physicians that will make each resident feel at home.
