Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR) alumni, Cindy Forbes, PhD, has been recognized for her publication Prevalence and Correlates of Strength Exercise Among Breast, Prostate and Colorectal Cancer Survivors, which was published in the Oncology Nursing Forum in March of 2015.
The Excellence in Writing Award for Quantitative Nursing Research is granted for the product of scientific inquiry. Accepting the certificate and $1,000 award on behalf of the writing team, Dr. Forbes's paper will also be acknowledged at the ONS Annual Congress in the compendium of awards, honors and other special recognitions produced and distributed annually by ONS.
Forbes and her co-authors, including KSR Dean Kerry Mummery and KSR Professor and Cancer Research Chair Kerry Courneya, conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive survey of 741 breast, prostate and colorectal cancer survivors in Nova Scotia. Their findings showed that prevalence of strength exercise is low among these survivor groups and the correlates are consistent. From this, Forbes strongly recommends nurses take an active role in promoting strength exercise among cancer survivors using the Theory of Planned Behavior, particularly among those survivors at higher risk of not performing strength exercise.
