Joseph Doucet
College Dean & Vice Provost, Social Sciences and Humanities
Joseph Doucet is the interim college dean and vice provost of the University of Alberta’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities, which brings together the combined strength of the faculties of arts, business, education, and law. It represents a total of 500 faculty members and 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
A respected academic, Joe has held faculty and visiting appointments at Université Laval, the University of Florida, and Université Montpellier (France); he earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Joe started with the University of Alberta as an associate professor with the Alberta School of Business in 2000, was named the Enbridge Professor of Energy Policy in 2005, and led the school as dean from 2013 to 2021.
Under Joe's leadership, the college will expand the boundaries of knowledge and understanding of ourselves and of our society. From the creative arts and the humanities to education, law and business, this college will lead in teaching and research on all dimensions of fostering an inclusive, creative, equitable, just, prosperous, free and democratic society, with opportunity and well-being for all.
Joe’s research interests focus on the areas of energy and regulatory economics and policy and he regularly provides strategic advice to firms and governments on these topics. His research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Regulatory Economics, the Canadian Journal of Economics, Energy Economics, and the Energy Journal. He is a past President of the Canadian affiliate of the International Association for Energy Economics, a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Regulatory Economics, and past Editor of the Energy Studies Review journal.
Joe currently sits on the boards of Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) and La Fondation franco-albertaine. He is also a member of the C.D. Howe Institute's Energy and Natural Resources Policy Council. Joseph and his wife Karen reside in Edmonton and are the proud parents of four adult sons.
