On January 31, Lindi Carter will be retiring from her role in the University Governance Office (although her last day on campus will be December 21). So before she goes, we hope that you’ll take a few minutes to get to know Lindi, through her own words and those of her colleagues.
Lindi in her own words
Where is your favourite place on campus?
I actually have several places that I really like on campus. I like the pond area between HUB Mall and Convocation Hall — that whole area is beautiful in the Summer and Fall.

Image courtesy of Lindi CarterI also like Quad. Quad has a lot of great memories for me over the years. One of my favourite memories is in September when the students gather in Quad and have different events going on.
I love to see the hustle and bustle of students on this campus. I will miss that. I also like walking along Saskatchewan Drive, this area is lovely in the summer.
Name one thing that you wish you could take home with you when you go.
The memories I have had at the U of A are what I will take home with me. The experiences I have had over the years and the people I have met. I have had so many different roles here at the University and that has given me so much growth. This is what I will take home with me.
What is the one thing you can’t live without?
Physical activity and my tea in the morning. Physical activity is great for my mind, and it helps me to reduce stress.
If you could switch jobs with someone else on campus for a week, what would you do?
I would work in a Department in any Faculty on campus. I have never had the experience of working in a Department and this is something I have always wanted to do. Most of my experience has been working in Administration which has been wonderful, but just to see what happens in Faculties would be interesting to me.
What 3 words best describe your U of A experience?
Interesting. challenging. Rewarding.
Any advice that you’d offer to a new staff member just starting out?
Patience is the key. I find that so many people in the work force want to move up very quickly and they also want to be paid a large sum of money for what they do. My advice is to stay where you are for a few years, learn your job well, be patient and you will grow.
From her colleagues
I hope that you’ll join me in extending best wishes to Lindi Carter, who is officially retiring at the end of January after a long and rewarding career at the University of Alberta. Lindi’s final day with University Governance will be December 21, 2015 as she intends to enjoy the coming holiday season with her family, followed by some well-earned vacation time.
Lindi has been a highly-valued member of the University for 28 years! Her long-standing service and dedication to this institution is appreciated and admired by her fellow co-workers and colleagues, students and faculty, and the many friends that she has made during her time with the university.
Lindi arrived on campus in 1987 to assume a support staff position with Printing Services. By 1989, Lindi had joined the University Secretariat and since then, has continued to excel through a variety of progressively responsible administrative supporting roles, and ultimately achieving her current position as the Governance Systems Coordinator in University Governance.
Professionalism, perseverance, love of learning, friendly demeanor, sense of humor and enthusiasm are a few of the special qualities and traits which have guided Lindi along a successful path, both personally and professionally.
On behalf of my governance colleagues, I can say that she will be dearly missed and we will be challenged to replace her.
Warm congratulations Lindi, on your approaching retirement!
