On November 5, 2015, the Government of Alberta introduced legislation requiring the annual public disclosure of employees’ compensation at 157 provincial boards, agencies, and commissions. Bill 5, the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act, received Royal Assent and came into effect on December 11, 2015. As one of the boards, agencies, and commissions affected by this legislation, the University of Alberta is required to comply with the Act along with all other publicly-funded post-secondary institutions in the province. The first disclosure will be required on or before June 30, 2016 for compensation paid in the calendar year 2015.
The University of Alberta is committed to keeping affected employees informed and supported through this process. According to the Act, the university must disclose the name, position, compensation, non-monetary benefits and severance all employees whose total 2015 compensation exceeds a threshold of $125,000. There is no threshold for Board of Governors members; any remuneration paid by the university to a member must be disclosed. Legislation ensures that disclosure under the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act is permitted by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP).
To prepare for the upcoming disclosure, Human Resource Services has assembled a Compensation Disclosure Working Group (CDWG) with cross-university representation to review the requirements of the act, assess its impact, and provide information to the community as needed.
More detailed information about the legislation and its potential impact on you is now available on the Compensation Disclosure website (within Human Resource Services). As more information is provided by the Government of Alberta, the website will be updated. We will also continue to provide information updates on The Quad and by email.
If you have any questions, please refer to the FAQ or contact the CDWG at compensation@ualberta.ca.
