World Diabetes Day seems like the perfect time to reflect on the legacy of diabetes research at the University of Alberta, which spans almost 100 years. Numerous advances have been made starting with the work of James Collip on the purification of insulin with Banting and Best, followed by the pioneering of Canada's first islet cell transplantation, building a foundation for the development and application of the Edmonton Protocol. Research at the Alberta Diabetes Institute continues to build on this incredible legacy with a focus on translating discovery science into health solution for the prevention, treatment and cure of diabetes.
The Institute continues to break through barriers and make new discoveries towards understanding diabetes, which I am pleased to share with you in our latest biennial report to the community.

As always, the extraordinary support from our donors is not to be overlooked. Without their support, most of the research simply could not happen. As ever, we continue to make strides towards our ultimate goal - improving the lives of people living with diabetes and ultimately finding a cure.
