Have You Met…Charter Day?

Okay, so you can’t really “meet” a day — but you can “greet” it. You can also know it and can even celebrate it… so spend the next two minutes getting to know the University of Alberta’s Charter Day.

Where is your favourite place on campus?

All of it — one of the advantages of being a “day” is that I’m not confined to any one space, so I get to experience all of the U of A’s campuses and places at once. I love it all!

Tablet or paper?

Paper — I was created to celebrate the 1906 passing of the University Act, which was originally written on paper, so it seems like a logical choice.

Name one thing you’ve brought to work from home.

Does an appreciation for the university count?

What is the one thing you can’t live without?

The pursuit of knowledge.

If you won airfare to anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I’d like to visit all of the places touched by the efforts and good work of the U of A’s past and current community members. It would be a long trip.

You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?

Serious answer: Alexander Rutherford because he sponsored the act that I was created to celebrate. Less serious answer: Bilbo Baggins, because I found this gif which suggests we’re the same age this year:

If you could switch jobs with someone else on campus for a week, what would you do?

To make it easy, I’d swap spots with another day. Specifically, I’d like to switch places with one of the Convocation days. I’m a day to celebrate the establishment of the university, so getting to see the culmination of the university experience in the form of convocation would be great.

What does “uplifting the whole people” mean to you?

The extension of knowledge and compassion to all.

If you could solve any problem in the world, what would it be?

Fake news — how did we get here?

What 3 words best describe your U of A experience?

Happy you’re here.

About Charter Day

Charter Day’s origins can be traced back to June 10, 1909 when the University Senate, under the leadership of Chancellor Charles Allen Stuart, added the event to the University of Alberta’s calendar. May 9 was selected to host this anniversary since the University Act received royal assent on May 9, 1906. The University Act established the University of Alberta.
