
The University of Alberta has lowered it's flag in remembrance of both professors emeriti Henry Hargreaves and Helen Liebel-Weckowicz.
Henry Allen (Hank) Hargreaves II, beloved husband of Lee Hargreaves, passed away surrounded by his loving family at Foothills hospital in Calgary, Alberta on July 27, 2017 at the age of 88 years.
Hank grew up in the Bronx after which he gave distinguished service to the US Navy during World War II. He attended Mt Allison University, earning two degrees and excelling academically and in his musical endeavours. He then obtained a PhD from Duke University and taught for many years in the English Department at the University of Alberta, as well as singing with the Edmonton Opera for eighteen years. In 2016 Hank was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Hall of Fame in recognition of his award winning books and seminal contribution to the Science Fiction genre. He was also a loving and wonderful father to Alyson Hargreaves, Hal Hargreaves (deceased 1996), and Heather Barnum (nee Hargreaves). Grandfather to Daniel, Rebecca and Sophie Barnum.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Hank's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Helen Liebel-Weckowicz died Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Capital Care Lynnwood in Edmonton. Helen Pauline Grit Liebel was born on June 17, 1930 in Manhattan, New York City, USA to Anni Liebel (nee Bonk) and Emil Liebel. Both parents had emigrated from Germany. She graduated from Brooklyn College 1952 and received an MA in 1953 and a PhD in History 1959 from Northwestern University, Illinois, and received a Fulbright grant to study at the University of Marburg, West Germany 1955-57. She worked on the US Natl. Archives Project for Microfilming and Screening Captured War Documents 1954-55.
She immigrated to Canada August 1962 and became a professor of history at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. She was a member of the American History Association and wrote many papers and articles appearing in professional journals.
In 1966 she married Thaddeus Eugene Weckowicz, Psychologist and fellow professor (deceased in August 2000). She and husband Teddy traveled extensively to Europe, South America, the Galapagos Islands, Japan and the United States. Together they wrote a book "History of Abnormal Psychiatry". Teddy died August 2000.
Helen is survived by a sister, Clara Horn, 85, in Windsor, Connecticut, USA and a brother, Alfred Liebel, 82, in Belair, Maryland, USA and many grandnephews and nieces.
