As another year begins, Human Resource Services would like to remind you of changes that will take effect in 2019 and the things you can do to ensure your pay information is up to date.

The pay dates for 2019 have been updated and are now available on the Pay Schedules web page and the Pay, Time Off and Holidays calendar.

A reminder that if your CP and EI deductions had stopped in 2018; your first pay deposit in the 2019 taxation year will have both CPP and EI deductions once again. You will continue to be deducted for both CPP and EI until you have reached the 2019 maximum limits set by CRA. For 2019, the CPP maximum deduction for employees is $2748.90 and the EI maximum deduction for employees is $860.22.

The 2019 TD1 — Personal Tax Credit forms have been released from Canada Revenue Agency, we ask that you review your personal tax situation and ensure that the personal tax exemptions we have on file for you are accurate and up to date. The tax exemption we have on file for you can be found on your paycheque in the Tax Data section under the Net Claim amount. If you wish to adjust these amounts, please follow the instructions on the Personal Tax Credit Return web page and send the signed and completed forms to the Human Resource Services for updating.

Employees are required to provide Human Resource Services with their direct deposit information as per the U of A direct deposit policy. Direct Deposit is faster, more convenient and secure when processing payments. Effective immediately Payroll will be holding cheques in Human Resources for five business days and then releasing them via Canada Post to your home mailing address on file. To avoid this delay in your payment please ensure your banking information is entered on the employee self-serve portal.

Learn how to receive your cheque as a direct deposit by visiting the Direct Deposit web page.

As a result of Bill 17 — Alberta Employment Standards Changes being passed in 2018, the General Holiday Pay changes come into effect January 1, 2019. This change encompasses the following three areas:

  • Removal of the qualifying period for holiday pay. Employee is now eligible from date of hire as long as they were active and accountable on the general holiday
  • All employees at the university will observe the same eleven general holidays
  • Payment of general holiday pay varies depending on how the employee is paid (hourly vs. salaried) and whether or not they are scheduled to work on the holiday or not.

We are working diligently on incorporating these changes into our processes. In the interim, please contact payroll.operations@ualberta.ca if you have any questions about holiday pay.
