In January, Dr. Katy Campbell announced that after twelve years as Dean of the Faculty of Extension, she would be stepping down from the role as of June 30, 2019. Dr. Campbell will be returning to her academic position in the Faculty of Extension after a period of administrative leave.

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Maria Mayan has agreed to serve as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Extension from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2021.

Dr. Mayan is a Professor in the Faculty of Extension and the Assistant Director of Women’s and Children’s Health for the Community-University Partnership. As an engaged scholar, she grounds her work in the policy environment, targeting the causes of marginalization and how to mobilize against systems of inequity. Her current research program is embedded in End Poverty Edmonton.

She comes to her role as Interim Dean from the position of Associate Dean (Research), a position she has held since September 1, 2016. Dr. Mayan is well-positioned to lead the Faculty of Extension over the next two years, and she is looking forward to continuing the Faculty’s important work in the scholarship of community engagement, English language learning, as well as continuing and professional education. In particular, she looks forward to collaborating with other Faculties to expand access to and engagement in these experiences and opportunities at our institution.

I know that you will join me in congratulating her and supporting her in this new role.

Over the next two years, we will engage in a search for a new Dean of Extension in accordance with the UAPPOL Faculty Dean Selection Procedure.

I want to thank those who provided me with valuable feedback and perspectives about the needs of the Faculty of Extension in this period of interim leadership. I also want to thank Dr. Katy Campbell, again, for her many years of service and leadership in the Faculty.
