The University of Alberta banner is flying at half-mast from April 21-24, 2023 in remembrance of Dr. Massimo Verdicchio, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Arts.

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Dr. Massimo Verdicchio announces his passing on April 7, 2023, at the age of 77. Massimo “Nonno” passed away, after showing much courage, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. Massimo was a devoted husband, dad, brother, and nonno.

Massimo was born in Naples, Italy on May 1, 1945, and was the second oldest in a family of six brothers who immigrated to Canada in 1961. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in arts from the University of British Columbia. Massimo later earned another master’s degree and Doctorate degree from Yale University. He then began his academic career, which spanned over 40 years, at the University of Alberta.

Massimo was preceded in death by his parents, Luigi and Nunzia; and his brother, Sergio. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosanna; his loving children, Jennifer (Dimitri), Rob (Tanya), Melissa (Patrick), Daniel (Robbie); and his three grandchildren who he adored, Cristiano, Ilena, and Aston. Massimo is also survived by his brothers, Fulvio (Kimberly), Giorgio (Vanessa), Marcello (Jocelyn), Roberto (Lisa); sister-in-law, Joni; and many nieces and nephews.
