Every day, I see how people are foundational to all that we do at the University of Alberta as you support students and colleagues and advance our commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
To staff, faculty, and students, I want to share how grateful I am to all of you. Throughout 2023, we have accomplished much together — all possible thanks to you.
This year, we came together to achieve significant milestones, including the launch of Shape: A Strategic Plan of Impact, a collective vision, and Forward with Purpose, the first university-wide research and innovation strategy. We also began the consultation process to support the creation of a community-informed, inaugural People Strategy, which I am co-leading with Todd Gilchrist, vice-president (University Service & Finance). Across our campuses, at every level, I saw you building on the U of A’s 115-year legacy, showcasing how our North Star is about making a difference and a positive impact for all.
I also want to recognize your commitment to the U of A at a time when grief and anguish sparked by strife in the world are part of our lives. Respect, empathy and support for one another are essential as we navigate these turbulent times together.
I hope the winter break brings you peace, health, happiness and time with your loved ones. And I hope to see you all rejuvenated and rested for the start of 2024.
With appreciation and gratitude,
Verna Yiu
Interim Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
